- Like spark plugs in gasoline engines, diesel engine spark plugs can become fouled or worn out over time. This can lead to misfiring, poor engine performance, and increased fuel consumption. Seals, including oil seals, have undergone a great development in recent years and are totally unlike the original product. PTFE has taken over the oil seals market for modern engines mainly because traditional oil seals started causing more and more problems. Such as evaporation of chemical plasticisers from the elastomeric material, which eventually caused engine oil leakage. Now, the focus is more on durability and frequency of servicing.

1) Common seal types and their features


There is a British Standard laid down for the control of synthetic rubbers. BS 3574 (1989) helps to determine shelf life – for instance, Nitrile (NBR) and Polyacrylic (ACM) are Group ‘B’ rubbers and have a 7-year life, whilst Silicone (VMQ) and Fluoroelastomers (Viton®) are Group ‘C’ rubbers and have a 10-year shelf life. PTFE and Leather do not come into this category but like the others should be kept in the original packing for as long as possible away from direct light, dust, and humidity. Ozone, which can also be produced by battery-driven forklift trucks has a very bad effect on synthetic rubbers. Finally, protect the sealing lip – DO NOT hang the seals on nails, wire etc.
Oil seals are made out of nitrile synthetic rubber with steel stiffener rings. Other rubbers such as viton, silicon, neoprene or poly acrylic can be used for specific applications. The stiffener rings may be stainless steel or brass where highly corrosive fluids are to be sealed. Springs are generally made of spring steel to IS: 4454:Gr.ll or from stainless steel or bronze for corrosion resistance
