Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is renowned for its brightness, high refractive index, and stability. It comes in two primary crystalline forms rutile and anatase. Rutile is predominantly used in the production of tires due to its superior characteristics, including high UV resistance, durability, and excellent pigmentary properties. These features make TiO2 an ideal choice for enhancing the performance and longevity of tire products.

However, some experts and food regulators in other countries disagree – pointing to potential, serious health consequences and rising concerns about the additive. Starting August 7, for example, the use of titanium dioxide in food will be banned in the European Union.

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, lithopone also offers practical advantages for leather suppliers. Due to its low cost and wide availability, lithopone is a cost-effective option for leather manufacturers looking to minimize production expenses without compromising on quality. Its stable chemical properties also make it easy to work with during the manufacturing process, resulting in a smooth and efficient production line.

The assessment was conducted following a rigorous methodology and taking into consideration many thousands of studies that have become available since EFSA’s previous assessment in 2016, including new scientific evidence and data on nanoparticles. 

Lithopone is rather nontoxic, due to the insolubility of its components. It has been used in medicine as a radiocontrast agent. Lithopone is allowed to be in contact with foodstuffs in the US and Europe.^[1]

Risk managers at the European Commission and in EU Member States have been informed of EFSA’s conclusions and will consider appropriate action to take to ensure consumers’ protection.

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Titanium dioxide is the most common white pigment used today. As a pigment, titanium dioxide is unique because it combines both high colouring and high opacifying capacity. This is mainly due to its high refractive index (2.7). Furthermore, titanium dioxide is an excellent UV absorber (it is used in sun protective creams). Some typical properties are: density 3.3-4.25 g/cm³; pH of water suspension 3.5-10.5; particle size 8–300 nm; oil absorption 10–45 g/100 g; specific surface area 7–160 m²/g. Most titanium dioxide is produced from the rutile (TiO₂) or ilmenite (titanate of ferrous iron). Titanium dioxide can be obtained using different processes.

It is suitable as an alternative to titanium dioxide when higher acid resistance is required, such as in adhesive joints and sealants.

A 2022 review on past studies of titanium dioxide and rat lung cancer, for instance, said the original study was under extreme conditions and its effects were not replicated in other animal species. Additionally, the review concluded that the few studies which did directly focus on titanium dioxide's impact on humans did not end up showing any increased cancer risk.

A review published in 2022 in the journal NanoImpact evaluated the latest research related to genotoxic effects of titanium dioxide through in vivo studies and in vitro cell tests. Researchers summarized the results by stating TiO2 nanoparticles “could induce genotoxicity prior to cytotoxicity,” and “are likely to be genotoxic to humans.”
