Both calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide play crucial roles in various industries, but they are used for different purposes. Calcium carbonate is primarily used as a filler and pigment, while titanium dioxide is used as a whitening agent and pigment. Additionally, titanium dioxide is more expensive to produce than calcium carbonate due to its synthetic nature and complex manufacturing process.
Mexican researchers sought to evaluate the effects of E171 across a span of conditions in mice, including its influence on behavior, along with the effects on the colon and liver. The research, published in 2020 in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, showed that E171 promoted anxiety and induced adenomas, or noncancerous tumors, in the colon. They also found that E171 heightened goblet cells hypertrophy and hyperplasia, which is typically seen in asthma patients and triggered by smoking or external pollutants and toxins. They also noted mucins overexpression in the mice, which can be linked to cancer cell formation.
After drying, the sample is weighed precisely, and through stoichiometric calculations, the amount of titanium dioxide in the original sample can be determined
. The resulting calculation helps determine the gravimetric percentage of titanium dioxide present, providing manufacturers with critical information for quality control.

Currently, titanium dioxide as a food additive is classified as GRAS, or “generally recognized as safe.”
CSPI’s Chemical Cuisine is the web’s definitive rating of the chemicals used to preserve foods and affect their taste, texture, or appearance. Besides titanium dioxide, the group recommends avoiding artificial sweeteners like aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose, as well as synthetic food dyes like Yellow 5 and Red 3. CSPI and others have recently asked the Food and Drug Administration to ban the latter dye in foods and ingested drugs because the FDA has already determined that it is a carcinogen unsafe for use in cosmetics.
